A NOTE FROM OUR TEACHER, GEMMA.
So let’s put one thing straight… yoga is not about being able to touch your toes and is more than bending into weird and wonderful shapes.
The word yoga means to ‘yoke’ a coming together of mind, body and breath. Uniting these elements allows us to connect back into ourselves.
I came to yoga 5 years ago, after suffering with stress from a demanding corporate job I was treading water and in full on ‘survival’ mode, my body just said ‘enough is enough’ and it hit the pause button for me.
Medical advice suggested trying yoga (I was more a HIIT and weights type of girl) so attending my first class I was very apprehensive, I am not your typical ‘yogi’ - having painted a picture of the instagram yoga bodies and how they contorted themselves into these almost impossibles shapes, well I need not have worried - I discovered we are all anatomically different, different bodies work in different ways, different events throughout your week and day will play a role in how your practice flows, everybody is different - and that is ok!
Over time I have come to see the benefits this wonderful practice has to offer, how it affects people in so many positive ways. So, I decided it was something I wanted to be able to give back to people, like me, and for those who also deal with stress, anxiety, worry, insomnia plus much more - we all need time to escape and to give back to ourselves there’s no shame in some self care and self love.
My teaching style is focused towards mental health and improved wellbeing for all. Delivered through the practices of Yin, Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep), these practices help us to really connect back in, allowing the body and mind to relax - embracing stillness with body and mind is a test for anyone (even me!) - but with patience and practice, plus a little kindness, we all start to ease, soften and enter a better place of relaxation - pure bliss.
So Yoga, for me, is not about standing on your head or bending inside out. It is to nourish you, allowing the mind to be clear to focus on you.
I cannot wait to join you on your journey.
